Ishant Sharma became the third Indian rider to win 300 test wickets on Monday, after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan. Sharma, 32, took the leap by sacking England batsman Dan Lawrence in the 16th of England’s second round at the Chennai Test.
Sharma is now the sixth Indian bowler to reach the benchmark in red-ball cricket. It is also the slowest at 300 counters.
Former Indian captain and skater Anil Kumble tops the charts with 619 wickets. Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), R Ashwin (382), Zaheer Khan (311), and Ishant (300 *) follow suit. Ashwin was the fastest to get there, taking just 54 matches, followed by Kumble (66), Harbhajan (72), Kapil (83), and Zaheer (89).
He has 11 runs from five wickets and has picked up 10 wickets in a game once. The lean stimulus spell to former Australian captain Ricky Ponting during his teenage years is still discussed in Indian cricket circles.
Ishant, who made his test debut in 2007 against Bangladesh, missed the four-game streak against Australia due to side tension and returned for the challenge against England.
Wishes poured in soon after Sharma hit the landmark.
“Congratulations @ImIshant. He becomes the third Indian fast bowler to take 300 test wickets. He traps Lawrence upfront as England lose their third wicket, ”tweeted the BCCI shortly after accomplishing the feat.
The ICC also praised the achievement of the seasoned fast bowler after more than 13 years of hard work.
“Ishant Sharma becomes the third Indian player after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to reach the 300 wicket mark in the tests. What an achievement! The world’s gaming governing body tweeted.
Meanwhile, the Indian bowlers made it through the top half of England, but the visitors still extended their overall lead to a formidable 360 points on day four of the opening test on Monday.
England were 119/5 at tea after knocking out the hosts for 337 for a massive 241 innings lead in the first set.
